Egypt academic suspended for ‘insulting Prophet Muhammad’

A sociology professor in the Egyptian city of Alexandria has been suspended for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad while airing his views about the Charlie Hebdo cartoons in a broadcast online.

Students at the Higher Institute for Social Work said they were offended by Muhammad Mahdali’s comments and lodged a complaint.

They posted footage after the professor deleted his feed and apologised.

The minister of higher education has ordered the suspension of Dr Mahdali and ordered an urgent investigation.
