Parliament’s Legal Committee okays anti-LGBTQ Bill

Ghana’s Parliamentary Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs has given go-ahead for the passage of the Nill seeking to criminalise the practise homosexuals, gays and related activities.

The Committee thus recommends, the passage into law, the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, subject to some amendments it noted that must be taken into consideration.

About 200 interest groups including human rights groups and activists, religious organisations, traditional authorities as well as UN organs with mandates on human rights, submitted memoranda on the Bill.

The 8-member Committee is chaired by Kwame Anyimadu Antwi, the Member of Parliament for for Asante-Akim Central constituency had been deliberating on the Bill when it was to sent Parliament in March 2023.

Other members are on the Committee are Ningo Prampram MP, Samuel George Nartey; Ho West MP, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Kpando MP, Della Adjoa Sowah and Assin South MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordwour.

The rest are Tamale North MP, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini; La Dade Kotopon MP, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Krachi West MP, Helen Adjoa Ntoso as well as South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor.
