Pastor accidentally shoots himself dead

A retired Church of Pentecost Pastor, Reverend Seth Ayemantey, has accidentally shot himself dead at Asamankese, a town located in the West Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region.

According to the son of the deceased, Elder Matthew, who spoke to Faithnewsgh.com, the incident occurred on Wednesday April 28, 2021 at about 1700 hours when his father was going to fire warning shots to scare away hoodlums in his vicinity.

“My father was going to fire warning shots at some hoodlums who were smoking marijuana around his house to scare them away. While drawing to a safe place where he could pull trigger, my younger brother decided to follow him for security reasons.

“He called on my dad to ask where exactly he was heading to fire the shots, but on turning he stumbled upon a stick and because it had rained earlier and the whole place was muddy, he slipped and fell. Trying to protect himself, his hand inadvertently pressed against the trigger and it fired, hitting his shoulder.

“When my brother lifted the old man up and saw the severity of the situation, we rushed him to the Asamankese Government hospital where the doctor in charge declared him dead upon arrival.” Elder Matthew narrated.

He noted that the retired Pastor often fired warning shots at the hoodlums because he was allergic to the smell of the marijuana they usually smoke, not neglecting the fact that they engage in larcency.

He said: “There are lots of criminals in the area. They smoke marijuana and they steal too. Recently they stole the District Police Crime Commander’s car which till now has not been recovered. So my dad had the licensed gun which he often fired to scare them away for his protection because of his allergy. Policemen are sometimes sent to keep them away too and all those brought some calm in the area.

“So when it had rained on that Wednesday and the atmosphere was chilly, the smell of the marijuana became more irritating to him which led to the decision to fire the warning shots again for them to assume it was the presence of the Police.”

The late Mr. Ayemantey’s case has however been reported to the Asamankese Police for investigation as part of formalities.
