Rising fuel prices: GPCC wants stabilzation levy removed outrightly

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has outlined measures Government of Ghana can adopt in a bid to ease the economic hardship bedevilling the ordinary Ghanaian.

According to the Christian organization in a statement signed by the General Secretary Reverend Emmanuel Barrigah, Price Stabilization Recovery Levy which the government has accumulated over the years for purposes of stabilizing fuel prices in spiralling periods should be released to serve its purpose.

While the Government is at it, the same levy should be reviewed downward or be removed outrightly since the price hike “has affected the prices food items in the market and is threatening the very survival of many families and small businesses.”

“Take all fiscal and monetary measures to stabilize the depreciating local currency against the US dollar to further stabilise the prices of petroleum products and other imports whose prices are impacting negatively on the purchasing power of the ordinary citizen” the statement further urged.

It called also for reduction in duties levied on building materials and other essential imported commodities to relieve Ghanaians of the very high rental prices charged tenants by property owners.

The clarion call on the government to consider its practical measures comes at a time when individuals, groups and political parties across the length and breadth of the country have bemoaned the difficulties they continue to face as a result of the unending price increases.

Meanwhile, the GPCC in the midst of the call, has assured the government of its support in ensuring that the youth whose “economic woes are being worsened by the ongoing economic harship” acquire skills through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) which give them meaningful employment.

The assurance came on the back of a GPCC-Government of Ghana (GoG) Partnership programme implemented in TVET schools aimed at integrating entrepreneurial skills, business development, offering business registration support as well as making the provision of start-up kits for all trainees as a way to ensuring that they quickly put to good use the skills acquired.
