VGMA22: ‘It’s not always about you, but the industry’ – Joe Mettle

Winner of Gospel Artist of the Year category at the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), Joe Mettle, has said that he does not sing for fame but has been focused on propagating the gospel through his music.

The “Ye Obua Mi” hitmaker over the weekend beat competition from the likes of Diana Hamilton, Obaapa Christy, Celestine Donkor, MOG Music, Empress Gifty, Ohemaa Mercy, and Akesse Brempong, to sweep the award at the 23rd edition of the ceremony.

In 2017, he was crowned the Artiste of the Year, the award which elevated him as the first non-secular artiste to have won the category, while he took the Gospel Artiste of the Year award and Male Vocalist of the Year award as well.

Last year, his colleague Diana Hamilton bagged four including the biggest award of the night−Artiste of the Year−and Vodafone’s Most Popular Song of the Year.

Meanwhile, there have been other categories won by other artistes in the industry in the latest: Ohemaa Mercy’s song titled “Ote me mu” which features MOG Music, won her the Gospel Song of the Year, while Niella’s “Where You are” won her the Female Vocal Performance of the year.

However, responding on Joy FM’s AM Show to whether or not he feels he is in competition with his colleagues in the industry and whether he is in a “comfortable lead”, Joe Mettle said its not about leading competition-wise, but the laurels the industry would have and be recognised for.

“I think for me, it is not even about lead. I guess its about the many wins we’ll have that will push it [the gospel]. My dream is that if it is not me, somebody should take it up. That’s my thing. Its not always you, not about your name but I would be happy when I always say that it is about the gospel. If we have more of our gospel people raising the flag high and winning some of these things it would be a great experience,” he answered on the show Monitored by Faithnewsgh.com
