Church of Pentecost joins campaign to protect Ghana’s vegetation

The Church of Pentecost has joined the national campaign aimed at conserving the vegetation of the country.

The organization in a tweet affirmed the need for the citizenry to renew their minds toward the environment for healthy living.

According to the post, by nature, man’s fundamental responsibility is to ensure a healthy environment of which the vegetation is no exception.

“The dominion responsibility which God has given to humans is: “to take care of [the earth],” not to plunder and destroy it” the church tweeted.

The clarion call comes at a time the government is urging all and sundry to join hands in planting some 20 million trees across the country.

The tree planting exercise comes off on June 10, 2022, the day set aside for this year’s nationwide reforestation under the programme dubbed “Green Ghana Project”.

According to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, whose outfit is leading the course, the seedlings are free for all interested persons.

In as much as it is not for sale, he said “If this ambitious target of 20 million seedlings will be achieved, all Ghanaians would have to come on board to make it a success”.

The Green Ghana project was birthed when the world’s economies realised that the forest reserve which accounted for some 30% reduction in climate change was lost to the illegal activities of unscrupulous persons.

In 2020 for instance, an estimated 10 million hectares of the world’s primary tropical forest was lost to such activities including illegal felling of trees, mining which is termed “galamsey” locally, among others.

The government, therefore, resolved to restore the forest cover under the Green Ghana Project which first took place on June 11, 2021, with the planting of some seven million trees nationwide.

With all welcomed on board for this year’s too, the Minister hinted that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will lead a delegation for the Presidential Commemorative Planting.

The delegation will be made up of traditional leaders, the Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, the clergy, Parliamentarians, and the diplomatic corps among many other national leaders.

The Presidential Commemorative Planting will take place at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park in Accra.
