Avoid spikes in Covid-19 cases – Pentecostal Council warns parties

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has reiterated its call on all political parties and their supporters, to be responsible in their campaign activities ahead of the December 2020 elections to forestall a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases.

The call comes barely 24 hours after President Akufo -Addo’s 14th COVID-19 address to the nation, where the president further eased some restrictions on social gatherings and religious activities.

According to a statement dated Monday, July 27, 2020, Rev. Emmanuel Barrigah [General Secretary of the council] urged political parties as well as their party supporters, to be committed to observing all the COVID-19 health and safety protocols during their campaign activities.

This, the council believes, would help prevent further spikes in reported positive cases in the country.

Figures from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) indicate that the active COVID-19 cases stands at 3, 307 with a death toll of 168 persons while cumulative cases are 32,969 as at Monday July 27, 2020.

The Pentecostal Council also stated that there hasn’t been any church related COVID-19 case since the partial easing of the restrictions seven weeks ago.

The GPCC attributed this achievement to the churches’ “commitment to protecting the lives of our congregants by scrupulously observing all the protocols”.

The council added that they are “however not oblivious of the fact that the pandemic is still raging on with no vaccines in sight yet at least for the next few months and as such would not take it for granted and pretend all is well back to normalcy”.

While expressing their appreciation to the president, the council further recognised the great sacrifices made by the frontline healthcare workers who risked their lives to keep the citizens safe during this pandemic.

It called on all Ghanaians to complement the government’s fight against the COVID -19 pandemic through adherence and discipline in observing the safety protocols.
